When you think of Vail, Colorado certain activities come to mind, namely skiing, snowboarding, and pretty much anything having to do with snow or the outdoors. Just like its name, the new Audi Q3 Vail Concept is aimed at interesting customers who enjoy the same activities for which the town has become famous for.

The exterior is painted in vehicle-specific Energy Red and has golden pearlescent particles within the clearcoat. Other eye-catching, esthetic pieces on the Q3 Vail’s exterior include matt gray quartz-based paint along the running boards, while a high-gloss package surrounds the windows with aluminum and high-gloss black.

On top of the colorful accents the special Q3 has unique stylistic elements that differentiate it from its more common counterpart. Flared wheel arches and running boards add a more aggressive look to the body lines and the roof line has added aluminum roof racks capable of carrying your skis and snowboarding to whatever winter resort you wish.

Helping you get to your destination is the Q3 Vail’s power plant, the same engine that powers the ultra, high-performance Audi TT-RS. The 2.5-liter turbocharged five-cylinder has been tuned down from the 360 hp and 343 lb-ft of torque found in the TT-RS to a slightly more manageable 314 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque for the special Q3. All 314 hp is transferred to all four wheels via Audi’s quattro permanent all-wheel drive system and a seven-speed S Tronic transmission.

Under the hood the Q3 Vail resembles the rest of the vehicle with a number of special colors, and accents to distinguish it. The cylinder head covering the five cylinders is painted in a red, wrinkled-paint design. Rounding out the specialties in the engine compartment include a partial carbon-fiber-reinforced polymer (CFRP) engine cover, decorative plastic trim around the engine compartment and the acoustic mat embroidered with “Q3 Vail” in gray stitching.

Like the rest of the vehicle, the interior of the Q3 Vail continues the trend of special colors, namely red, gray and black, along with activity-orientated features, trim pieces and leather upholstery. The trunk of the Q3 Vail has a built-in charging station capable of powering up flashlights, iPods and other electronic devices. Another feature in the trunk is integrated heat seating cushions which has been incorporated into the trunk floor mat. A third feature in the interior of the Q3 Vail is a custom Thermos bottle with built-in LCDs that tell you how much battery juice is left. The Thermos is located in the center console cup holder and is able to heat or cool a drink.

Although the Q3 Vail is a concept vehicle, Audi has confirmed that the U.S. will begin to see a U.S spec Q3 beginning in late 2013.

380 horsepower, 34 mpg: The Porsche Panamera S Hybrid

16 Feb

By Matt McCarron

Porsche announced that the newest member of its hybrid lineup will become available towards the end of this year. The Panamera S Hybrid is the second vehicle of its kind to be developed by the German manufacturer. The Panamera S Hybrid is not only a hybrid, it’s the most fuel efficient Porsche in history.

The Panamera S Hybrid is capable of producing a total of 380 horsepower; 333 via a 3.0-liter supercharged V6, with the remaining 47 being produced by an electric motor. The electric motor powers the vehicle until it reaches just north of 50 mph. This allows the Panamera S Hybrid to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 5.7 seconds and top out at 167 mph. All this power is controlled via the 8-speed Tiptronic S transmission.

In addition to being powerful, the gasoline and electric combination is also extremely fuel efficient. Porsche estimates the Panamera S Hybrid will average between 33-34 mpg on the highway. The varying mileage is due to low-rolling-resistance tires, which are optional. Another reason for the great fuel economy is what Porsche calls a “sailing” mode. Upon lifting off the gas pedal at highway speeds the gasoline engine completely shuts off and disengaged from the drivetrain by a decoupling clutch. The engine kicks back on when the driver applies pressure back onto the gas pedal. This “sailing mode” is possible because of Porsche’s “Hybrid Manager.”

Being that this is a Porsche, the interior comes as well designed and engineered as the exterior and mechanical components. The Panamera S Hybrid is equipped with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Porsche Communication Management navigation system (PCM), and bi-xenon headlights. The PCM has a special display, unique to the Panamera S Hybrid, that allows the driver to actively monitor the vehicles hybrid and electrical systems.

The Porsche Panamera S Hybrid is scheduled to go on sale towards the end of the year, with a base MSRP of $95,000.

Audi A8 L Security: Everyday citizens need not apply

15 Feb

By Matt McCarron

Bulletproof glass, fire extinguishing system, fresh-air system and wheels with steel with synthetic run-flat rings. If this sounds like something you need then you’re in luck. Audi announced it will be producing a high-security version of the their largest and most specious sedan, the A8 L. The A8 L Security is the epitome of over-the-top protection for those individuals who need added piece-of-mind when traveling from place to place.

The A8 L Security’s list of defensive technology as long as the Great Wall of China and includes all aspects and sections of the vehicle, from the suspension, body structure, drivetrain and interior.

The A8 L Security is powered by a W12. The 6.3-liter, 12-cylinder pushes out 500 horsepower and 460 lb-ft of torque. In addition to the W12, Audi says it will unveil a second engine for the A8 L Security. Audi has stated this second engine will be very fuel efficient. Audi has estimated it will average between 21-23 mpg.

The body structure and interior cabin is reinforced and armored to protect the occupants inside. The vehicle utilizes many high-tech and advanced materials including: hot-formed armored steel, aramide fabric, ceramics, special alloyed aluminum and multilayer glass. The joints and seams features overlapping armor to prevent any projectiles from entering the cabin. The interior also has added communication systems that would allow the passengers to stay in contact even in the event of a attack. The nerve center of all this communication is located in the “communication box,” which is heavily armored and is located in the luggage compartment.

Some of the most outrageous options on the A8 L Security is the fire extinguishing system, emergency fresh-air system and smoke extractor. The fire extinguishing system is operated by heat sensors or via a button. Upon activation, the fire extinguishing system sprays a fire retarding agent into wheel arches, underfloor of the passenger cabin, the area surrounding the gas tank and the engine compartment. The smoke extractor removes contaminated air from the cabin, while the emergency air-system allows the driver and passengers to breathe safely while exiting the danger zone.

The Audi A8 L Security is a true purpose-driven vehicle. If a head of state, Italian mob boss or controversial figure needs to get from point A to point B safely, not to mention in style, the A8 L Security will probably fit the bill. The A8 L Security will go on sale in late summer 2011.

2012 Mercedes Benz C-Class Coupe to debut in Geneva

13 Feb

By Matt McCarron

Following its television debut during Super Bowl XLV, Mercedes-Benz said information on the new 2012 Mercedes-Benz C-Class coupe would become available during mid-February, and it didn’t take long at all. Keeping with their word, Mercedes released details for the new two-door C-Class on Feb. 13.

The 2012 C-Class coupe is poised to make its world debut at the 2011 Geneva Auto Show on March 1. True to form, the C-Class coupe will be offered in two variations. The entry level C250, will be powered by a turbocharged, 1.8-liter, inline four-cylinder engine, producing 201 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 229 lb-ft of torque between 2,200-4,300 rpm. The upper level model C350 has a 3.5-liter V6 engine that produces 302 horsepower at 6,500 rpm and 273 lb-ft of torque from 3,500-5,250 rpm. Both power plants will be paired with a 7-speed automatic transmission.

The 2012 C-Class coupe will offer a number of improved communication and design features, allowing the driver to keep in contact without sacrificing safety or driver appeal. Some of the improved communication aspects include larger displays, phone book transfer, wireless streaming Bluetooth audio and a USB interface now located in the center armrest. The Sirius weather information and “Comand” navigation systems allow the driver to access maps and directions via Google maps, or transfer previously uploaded files from a PC directly to the vehicle.

Even though the C-Class coupe offers optional features, giving the driver access to the latest in-car technology, many Mercedes-Benz owners expect a certain level of quality and finish when purchasing a vehicle from the German manufacturer, whether it be in an entry-level C-250 or a top-of-the-line C63 AMG. The 2012 C-Class coupe is no exception. The interior of the C-Class coupe is tastefully adorned with metallic trim pieces, adding a feeling of class and elegance to the two-door coupe. The instrument panel’s three cylindrical rings are finished in a metallic hue, along with many of the controls and central and side air vents.

The 2012 C-Class coupe is an all-in-one package, combining sporty handling, a classy interior and aggressive styling. The MSRP should be expected to range between low-30 and 40K range. The 2012 C-Class coupe is expected to arrive in U.S. dealerships and showrooms in September.

Audi TT RS makes North American debut at Chicago Auto Show

10 Feb

By Matt McCarron

After initially making it’s world debut at the Geneva Auto Show in March 2010, the Audi TT RS was thought to only be destined for the European market, much like its larger and more powerful cousin, the Audi RS6. However, like most everything in life, things change. This allowed the TT RS to travel across the vast Atlantic ocean and be available to the U.S. market. This decision, which should only help boost Audi’s status in the United States, and has made enthusiasts of the “four rings” quite pleased.

The TT RS made its first official debut in North America yesterday, Feb. 9, at the 2011 Chicago Auto Show. The TT RS will be the newest addition to a pair of two-seaters currently available to the U.S. market, those being the standard Audi TT and sportier and nimbler TTS. Under the hood of the TT RS will be one extra cylinder, making this engine a 5-cylinder rather than the 4-cylinder in the other variants of the TT. The TT RS features a 2.5-liter 5-cylinder engine which produces an estimated 340 horsepower. This is a completely different engine than the 2.0-liter turbo-charged 4-cylinder,  which produces 265 horsepower.

The Audi TT RS will become available for purchase in late summer 2011. However, if you wish to get your hands on this petit German beauty you better act quickly. Under 1000 units will be produced for the U.S. market. The vehicle is expected to be priced around low-$60,000 range.
